2001 Parade of Homes' Let's be Water Smart Landscaping Contest Winners Announced

(James City County, VA) - Let's be Water Smart and the Peninsula Homebuilders Association are proud to announce the winners of the 2001 Let's be Water Smart Landscaping Awards. Judging was held on November 29 at the 2001 Parade of Homes at Greensprings West in James City County.

First place went to "Putter's Choice II," built by Ricky Egerton Contracting, Inc. and landscaping by One of a Kind Landscapes. One of a Kind also won best landscaping as part of the overall event judging. "The Herrington," built by D.R. Horton with landscaping by Design Landscaping, was awarded second place. The third place winner was "Hanley Hall," created by Wayne Harbin Builder, Inc., and Boyd Landscaping.

The 2001 Let's be Water Smart Landscaping Awards recognize local builders and landscapers who incorporate Water Smart landscape practices such as using native and drought resistant plant material, reducing turf areas that need to be irrigated, and retaining existing vegetation. The judges were Kevin Knuckles of Southern States, Tom Belden of Belden Landscapes, and Lee Schnappinger, James City County Landscape Architect.

The 2001 Parade of Homes is running through December 16, 2001. Model homes are open to the public from noon to 8 p.m. Monday thru Friday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. As visitors tour the homes, they can see Water Smart strategies in action and take home helpful Water Smart ideas they can incorporate in their own homes and lanscaping.

"Let's be Water Smart" is a public/private water management initiative of the James City Service Authority.
